Meaning:
It means a name built by a good character, deeds, work in the specific fields in society
is better than acquiring physical assets.
Thoughts:
Men are known by his or her ‘Karma (work)’ did in a lifetime. That’s why it is well said in
this proverb—A good name is better than precious ointment. Men have definite time
in life. Also, it is supported in the most popular speech by Steve Jobs at Stanford
University. What we do in our lives defines us—if we do wrong, we remembered
for bad; on the other hand, if we do good for society; people remember for a long time and adore you—this is the first part of today’s saying.

We know the people whose work was outstanding being remembered for years, for their work and loyalty towards
society not for their assets for intense, Money is not bought you everything: respect
is one of them. There are a lots examples availed—In Ramayana, Ravana had a
state Lanka of gold, but people remember and praise Lord Rama not Ravana. Money
is not there for you after death. It will remain there centuries however, your
name depends on your work did ‘good’ or ‘bad.’ In the nutshell, a good name matters
a lot than a precious ointment.

1: Now that he is rich and famous, he stopped helping the needy. On the other hand, that poor young man is always ready to help everyone. He proved that a good name is better than precious ointment.
2: The rude manager busted out on a peon of his company but the peon didn't even argue with him, he's so humble.
